As a part of Spenga's You vs. You Challenge (Mokena Studio), participants received a complimentary session with a Well-Choices Nutritionist. I recently started working with a nutritionist to provide me support while reaching for my personal goals. We have been fine tuning my diet with an emphasis on higher protein intake and focusing on what I CAN eat and not what I CAN'T. I'm looking forward to continuing with my sessions and making positive changes well after the 8-week challenge!

I’ve had wonderful support from my nutritionist with well choices. Customer service is also excellent. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a natural based nutritionist. I have been working with Ilysha for a couple weeks. I am so impressed with the access I have on the app to ask her questions at any time. I am eager to start my meal planning, as I need to lose stubborn baby weight. She helped me clean up my supplements that is helping me feel better and more energized. It’s also less expensive than what I was doing before.

I found it helpful to think about why I crave certain foods. To be able to recognize whether I'm truly hungry or just needing comfort, helps me to give myself some grace. It makes me pause to think about other choices I can make to satisfy my craving. Thank you for explaining the science behind cravings!

I have been working with Well-Choices for only a couple weeks now. I have to say this is the first program that has made me feel good about talking about nutrition. The holistic approach makes all the difference. Working towards nutrition goals from a lifestyle standpoint versus a diet standpoint is extremely refreshing. The first week of my program we focused mainly on improving sleep quality and stress management. The meals that my nutritionist selects for my nutrition guidelines are super easy to make and delicious. They don’t feel restrictive at all. I am not by any means someone who enjoys cooking or spending time in the kitchen, however, I’ve received many compliments on the meals that I’ve created asking where I bought them from. The recipes are easy to follow. And don’t take much time at all which is great for my busy schedule.

My licensed and very knowledgeable nutritionist at Well-Choices is extremely familiar & educated with female hormones, diets, better choices, supplements, etc. It’s been great having her help myself and my husband both repair and achieve our physical goals. Highly recommend Nikki and Well-Choices!My husband lost 10 lbs in 1 1/2 months just by eating better - and he’s enjoying the meals and snacks so much more! They are a great program. There are no scam diets or gimmicks. It’s all natural normal healthy standards everyone should already be doing. It’s common sense basically but with mainstream modern diet or health standards it’s promoting dangerous healthcare for us.If you’re think twice, please join the program. It’s affordable and you have to stay consistent. I lost 4 pounds after 2-3 weeks. They’re not printing pills or HCG drops. No it’s you and the nutritionist with a plan.

What to Look for in a Registered Dietitian

When searching for the best dietitian, there are several factors to consider to ensure a successful and beneficial partnership. Here are some key aspects to look for:

  1. Qualifications and Credentials: Ensure that the nutritionist you choose is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD)/(RDN), Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), or Naturopathic Doctor (ND). This guarantees that they have undergone rigorous education and training and adhere to professional standards. All nutritionists at Holistic Nutrition Therapy by Well-Choices are board certified nutrition experts.

  2. Specialization and Expertise: Look for a dietitian who specializes in areas that align with your specific needs. For example, if you require guidance for managing a medical condition or have specific dietary preferences, find a dietitian / nutritionist with experience in those areas.

  3. Experience: Consider the dietitian’s years of experience in the field. While newer practitioners can be knowledgeable, an experienced dietitian / nutritionist may have a broader understanding of various conditions and situations.

  4. Communication and Compatibility: Effective communication is crucial in the client-dietitian relationship. Look for a nutritionist who actively listens, understands your goals and concerns, and provides clear and practical recommendations. Personal compatibility and a good rapport can contribute to a positive experience.

  5. Client-Centered Approach: The best dietitians prioritize individualized care and tailor their recommendations to your unique needs and circumstances. They should consider your lifestyle, preferences, and goals when designing a personalized nutrition plan.

  6. Continuity of Care: Find out if the dietitian offers ongoing support and follow-ups. Long-term guidance and regular check-ins can help you stay on track and make necessary adjustments to your nutrition plan.

  7. Reviews and Recommendations: Consider reading online reviews and testimonials from past clients to gain insights into the dietitian’s expertise, professionalism, and effectiveness. Recommendations from trusted sources, such as friends, family, or healthcare providers, can also be valuable.

What is a registered dietitian nutritionist?

What is a Registered Dietitian

A registered dietitian is a professional who has completed a bachelor’s degree in nutrition or a related field and has fulfilled specific requirements to become registered and licensed to practice. Registered dietitians have extensive training in nutrition science, medical nutrition therapy, and counseling. They provide evidence-based dietary advice, develop personalized meal plans, and may specialize in weight management, sports nutrition, or clinical nutrition.

The requirements to become a registered dietitian (RD) may vary slightly depending on the country or region you are in. The following steps are commonly involved in becoming a registered dietitian. Earn a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university or college with a program specifically in dietetics or a related field. Complete a supervised and accredited internship or practicum program. This hands-on experience typically lasts around 6 to 12 months and provides practical training in various aspects of dietetics, including clinical practice, community nutrition, and food service management. Complete specific coursework requirements; this coursework typically covers topics such as food and nutrition sciences, medical nutrition therapy, food service management, and community nutrition. After completing the educational and practical requirements, you will need to pass a national registration examination. In the United States, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) administers the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) exam.

Registered Dietitian Tami Rowh, RD

The terms “dietitian” and “dietician” are often used interchangeably and refer to the same profession. Both terms refer to professionals who specialize in food and nutrition and provide expert advice on healthy eating, dietary planning, and nutritional therapy.

The distinction between “dietitian” and “dietician” primarily stems from historical and regional variations. In some countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, the preferred and officially recognized term is “dietitian.” These professionals typically hold the credential of a Registered Dietitian (RD) or a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

On the other hand, in certain countries, including the United Kingdom and South Africa, the term “dietician” is commonly used. Dieticians in these regions typically hold qualifications such as a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or Nutrition and Dietetics and may also be members of professional associations.

A Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) is a professional designation for individuals who have met specific educational and experiential requirements in the field of nutrition. The CNS credential is granted by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists (BCNS) in the United States. To become a CNS, individuals must hold a master’s or doctoral degree in nutrition or a related field from an accredited institution. The program should cover advanced coursework in subjects such as biochemistry, physiology, clinical nutrition, and research methodology.

In addition to the educational requirements, candidates for CNS certification must complete at least 1,000 hours of supervised and documented clinical experience in nutrition. This hands-on experience allows individuals to apply their knowledge in a practical setting. After meeting the educational and clinical experience requirements, candidates are eligible to sit for the CNS examination administered by the BCNS. The exam is comprehensive and covers various aspects of nutrition science, assessment, intervention, and counseling. The CNS designation indicates specialized knowledge in the field of nutrition and qualifies individuals to work in various settings. CNS professionals can provide personalized nutrition counseling, develop and implement nutrition programs, and work collaboratively with healthcare providers to support optimal health outcomes.

What is the Difference Between a Dietitian vs Nutritionist

The terms “dietitian” and “nutritionist” are related but have distinct differences in terms of qualifications, scope of practice, and professional regulation.  A dietitian is a regulated healthcare professional who has completed specific educational and professional requirements. The term “nutritionist” is broader and can encompass a range of professionals with varying qualifications and backgrounds. While some nutritionists may have formal education and credentials similar to dietitians, others may have completed shorter-term certificate programs or have expertise in specific areas of nutrition.

What does a registered dietitian nutritionist do?

Working with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) is a healthcare professional with the expertise to provide personalized nutrition advice and guidance to individuals, groups, and communities.

  1. Nutrition Assessment: RDNs conduct thorough assessments of individuals’ nutritional needs, health conditions, and dietary habits. They analyze factors such as medical history, body composition, laboratory values, and lifestyle to create a comprehensive picture of a person’s nutritional status.

  2. Medical Nutrition Therapy: RDNs are trained to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) to manage and treat various health conditions. They develop customized meal plans, taking into account specific dietary needs, allergies, and intolerances. RDNs may work with individuals who have conditions like diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, food allergies, obesity, or eating disorders.

  3. Nutritional Counseling: RDNs offer one-on-one counseling sessions to help individuals achieve their health and nutrition goals. They provide education, support, and guidance on topics such as weight management, healthy eating, sports nutrition, and lifestyle modifications. RDNs empower clients to make informed decisions about their nutrition and overall well-being.

  4. Menu Planning and Food Service Management: RDNs work in various settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and food service establishments. They collaborate with food service managers and chefs to develop nutritious and balanced menus that meet specific dietary requirements and cater to different populations, such as patients with specific medical needs or school children.

  5. Nutrition Education and Public Health: RDNs play a crucial role in promoting public health by delivering nutrition education and community programs. They may conduct workshops, seminars, and cooking demonstrations to educate individuals and communities about healthy eating, disease prevention, and overall wellness.

Benefits of working with a registered dietitian nutritionist

Working with a registered dietitian (RD) offers numerous benefits and advantages, including:

  1. Personalized and Evidence-Based Advice: Registered dietitians provide individualized nutrition recommendations tailored to your specific needs, goals, and health conditions. They assess your unique circumstances and develop a personalized plan that takes into account factors such as medical history, dietary preferences, cultural background, and lifestyle. RDs base their recommendations on current scientific evidence and research, ensuring that the guidance you receive is reliable and up to date.

  2. Professional Expertise and Knowledge: Registered dietitians undergo extensive education and training in nutrition science, medical nutrition therapy, and counseling. They are equipped with in-depth knowledge of the complex relationship between food, nutrients, and health. Their expertise enables them to address a wide range of nutrition-related concerns, from weight management and chronic disease prevention to specialized diets for medical conditions.

  3. Support for Health Conditions and Specialized Needs: RDs are experienced in providing medical nutrition therapy to manage and treat various health conditions. Whether you have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal disorders, food allergies, or other medical concerns, an RD can help you develop a dietary plan that supports your specific health needs and optimizes your well-being.

  4. Behavior Change and Sustainable Habits: Registered dietitians not only provide nutrition information but also help you navigate behavioral changes and establish sustainable habits. They offer guidance on portion control, meal planning, mindful eating, and strategies to overcome barriers and challenges. RDs act as coaches, supporting and empowering you to make positive and long-lasting changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.

  5. Accountability and Support: Working with an RD provides you with ongoing support and accountability throughout your journey. Regular follow-up appointments allow you to track progress, ask questions, and receive additional guidance and motivation. This support system increases your chances of success and helps you stay committed to your nutrition goals.

  6. Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Registered dietitians often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and therapists, as part of a multidisciplinary team. This collaboration ensures coordinated and integrated care, especially for individuals with complex medical conditions.

  7. Trust and Credibility: RDs are regulated healthcare professionals who adhere to strict ethical standards and professional codes of conduct. Their credentials and licensure provide assurance of their qualifications and expertise. Choosing to work with a registered dietitian ensures that you are receiving guidance from a trusted and credible source in the field of nutrition.
